I totally didn't know that Sakuragari vol 1 came out! I'm not much of a fan of hardcovers, but I will definitely get this. I'm so glad that it's going to be only two or three volumes, judging from the 「上」 designation. Less chance of Watase-sensei fucking it up. In any case, I realized that I hadn't read the latest chapters, so I went ahead and read chapters 3 and 4....

So far so good. It's really quite twisted. I like both characters and love how fucked up their relationship is right now. Will this end in tragedy? I hope so!

Souma: Why don't you talk lately? You're like a canary that's forgotten how to sing. You do everything I tell you to now...Is this how you defy me?
Masamune: ...
Souma: Go right ahead. If you hate me so much why don't you close your eyes so you can't see me?
Masamune: *closes eyes*
Souma: !!
Souma; *kisses Masamune*
Souma: I'll *make* you speak...

Oh, Souma, it's so sad that you don't know how to treat someone you care for. Crushing them in your hands to keep them from escaping will only end badly.

It must suck to be Souma. How unfortunate that you can bewitch virtually anything into madness just by existing. Of course, it'd help if you didn't sleep with everything with two legs, but I suppose ultimately it's the people who started him on the path of sexual depravity who is to blame.

I like the contrast with Masamune, a normal, good kid. His suffering is delicious. XD I hope they can reach each other's hearts (and then have a tragic ending). I look forward to reading more...

Random: A funny line from one of Watase-sensei's blog entries: 「ナルニアとヘルニアって似てるよね!」

Heh, you seem to have a less than sterling trust in her storytelling powers. XD

I trust her ability to write a good story as far as I can throw her, which is probably not very far. She can come up with great premises, but the execution...not so good.

Heh, that's often the case w/ a lot of mangaka, I find. A pity though, she's been around so long I would have thought she has authority enough to do what she wants and experience enough to follow through.

So totally second the "Tragic Ending PLZ!" Happy ending would just sit so badly on this story.

Also - Ecstasy at seeing her avoiding the Leaky, weepy Uke route... not that I mind THAT either. I just want this to be different. This way it somehow seems a lot more twisted and difficult and it DOES make me respect Masamune ... and it makes Souma more than a bewitching pretty boy who sleeps around a lot and angst even more...

I think a brief time of pure happiness would be appropriate, right before the shit hits the fan. XD

I definitely think the weepy uke would not have been good in this story. Masamune has his flaws, but weakness is not one of them. I love how defiant he is and how it doesn't include yelling and screaming after he makes the decision to submit to Souma. Souma's obsession with him makes sense, since Souma seems to have been surrounded by crazy and/or weak people.

There has to be redemption somewhere along the line otherwise it isn't proper tragedy. Without Catharsis it would just be yet another horrible naturalistic story and this is far to gothy to go down that road... I like that romantic feel the atmosphere has. Sad endings are best when they are liberating and not devestating...

*still wonders if Yuu Watase has the skill to pull this together to the end*.

Awful how much I love this and how little faith I have in her story telling and character building abilities ^^;;.
