Two recent Amazon recs intrigue me. But are they worth buying?

Toshishita no ryuugi 1 by Maruya Kae looks like a typical younger brother is in love with his oblivious older brother story. Read the first chapter (scanlated by DP) and the personalities don't grate. Does it degenerate, though?

Hana wa sakuka 1 by Hidaka Shouko has an absolutely gorgeous cover but apparently it's mostly set-up?

I want to buy more than Honto Yajuu volume 3, but I'm trying to be picky because I own too many books already. Any recs in general? I'd like something happy and sweet, like Honto Yajuu or Doushiyoumonai keredo...

I read "Toshishita no ryuugi" till ch.5 and personally I do not think it's going anywhere over-exciting. It's very pretty, though! It seems that there might be some sort of triangle, but nothing came out of it so far. Older brother continues being an oblivious angsty and younger brother - is just teenager angsty, but without much of an edge. they are the best when they are just silent. And it is also the first Maruya Kae's more than 1 vol. story, so it's rather very slow pacing and it could be safe to say that nothing actually happened in vol.1 )))
but having said all that, I will still buy it, because it is just very pretty )))

as for happy and sweet, cannot recommend much - I'm mostly for angsty and weird ))). Do you know Kikka Furutsuji (古街 キッカ ) ? I liked her first tanko "Sakura ni Aitara" a lot (here - couple of pictures). I've seen the chapters of her other story "You 6K2 Minamimuki" in the magazine and thought it was rather interesting with the sweet tone ))) And I'm rather curious about "Orutana" - the cover is just so promising, but I have not heard anything of about it.

Ah, I'm sad to hear that Toshishita no ryuugi isn't better than the usual, at least so far. The art is quite nice so I think I'll put it on my list to buy used someday...

Sakura ni aitara sounds pretty interesting, I may just buy it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Any particularly good angsty and weird stuff to recommend? I do love angsty but I've recently read too many stupidly angsty stuff to buy something randomly. I'd try something recommended tho...

the manga that really impressed me recently - Rasen no Sobyou by Aida Kaoru. First of all it is Taisho era (!) - wonderful fusion of clothes. The protagonist is a rentboy and with lots of angst and issues. But it is a very well done and solid characterization. The art seemed to me a mixture of ONOZUKA Kahori и KUNIEDA Saika - really emotional and elaborated drawing. There are scans at aarin if you want to check it out.

and speaking of ONOZUKA Kahori - I recommend all her BL stories (she does a lot of josei and yuri as well). "Bishounen" + "Bikenshi" are her two mangas based on Dan Oniroku's stories. Pure angst and no-happy end. Both prints are A5 and with several colour inserts. I have a little review with pictures from Bishounen - here and there are scans for both in aarin. But really her other BL stories are worthy checking out as well.

OOTAKE Naoko (大竹直子) Shiro no Shijima - I had a review of it here. No happy end, but oh!so angsty good. And beautiful art.

"Iro Otoko" by TORIBITO Hiromi is finally finished with 5 volumes. Taisho, brothers' love that develops into 2 separate pairing, angsty childhood, the most awesome mother in the BL and great clothes. Loved it to pieces, especially how they worked it out their incest love ^__^

ehh-h-h, now that look at this list and realize that all these mangas are historical angst. ah well, I guess I tend to like these sort of manga mostly because of the clothes ^__^ but hope you find smth for your liking as well )))

I passed on Hana wa sakaku 1 for just that reason--figured I'd wait until the rest came out and read it all at once. :/

Happy and sweet stuff....小椋ムク has a couple books out, the cat one I was just talking about on my journal and one other; those are both adorable. If you like 梅太郎, she just finished a two volume series (パパおかえり) that's really sweet.

I haven't read any of them yet, but from this year's このBLがやばい top 20 list, I ordered:

#4 テレビくんの気持ち - 松本ミーコハウス
#10 満員御礼 - 真生るいす
#12 椿びより - イシノアヤ

Also, can't go wrong with #5, セブンデイズ by 橘紅緒/宝井理人 (MONDAY→THURSDAY and FRIDAY→SUNDAY); slower paced, no smut, but very, VERY sweet. (Talked about here.)

I suppose I should wait for more of Hana wa sakaka as well...It's just that the cover looks so gorgeous I want to just own it. :P

Thanks for the recs, I will check them out! I've read and enjoyed Seven Days already. While some parts irritated me (I think it got too dawdling at times) I adored how it felt like almost nothing happened it was so のんびり, but in fact I felt tickled with delight.

I have no idea if the last part of that last sentence made any sense. ^^;

Haha, it made sense to me! XD The only thing I didn't like was Shino (girl!Shino, I mean), but I think we weren't supposed to like her, so whatev. Well, also I wish there had been a longer extra story at the end, but that's just greediness. >.>;;

Yeah, Shino was very irritating. I think the artist should have cut her out or fleshed her out better so she didn't seem so shallow and pointless (but still unlikeable?).

I don't think I would've wanted to see her cut out; Yuzuru's jealousy was sort of key to the development of the relationship (plus, teasing Seryou for being a masochist was hilarious XD). I feel like her being more likable would have made that part of the story work better for me...like, if she'd just been the brother's awesome* girlfriend that Seryou was in love with, I could deal with that. As it was, I couldn't figure out why the heck was Seryou so hung up on her when she was treating him like so much dirt.

*That is to say, if she had actually BEEN awesome

Hmmm... If it's something sweet, I'd never hesitate to recommend 川唯東子. The latest I've read from her is 雫 花びら 林檎の香り (currently being scanlated by Liquid Passion). The characters are just adorable and so easy to fall in love with ♥ I wouldn't be surprised if you've read it already XD

Thanks for the rec! I adore Kawaii Touko, but I haven't read the manga you mentioned. It sounds quite cute...I'm tempted to get it now...

Hana wa sakuka 1 - Highly recommended. It's mostly set-up, true, but it's a pleasure reading such a slow-paced beginning for a change. I'm really interested in seeing how Hidaka Shouko will be able to bring the main characters together, since the setting has been quite realistic so far, and they both seem like such passive personalities.

The chapters in the first volume were originally written in 2006-2008. The wait for the next volume is probably going to be long, but at least this one doesn't end in a horrible cliffhanger or anything? ^^;

(Uh, hi. I like your reviews, and tend to lurk here every now and then.)

Hi! Please chime in anytime! XD

I think I'll wait until another volume is published before buying the manga. Waiting forever for the next volume is painful, especially when the pacing is bordering on glacial.
