Finished the first DVD box of Avatar (up to episode 20). For the most part enjoyed it quite a bit. Definitely liked the main characters more. Sometimes things were a bit too pat, but as I liked how good the kids were I didn't get too annoyed.
The negatives: I was annoyed that Princess Yue HAD NO PERSONALITY. Ugh. It isn't a romance if one of the couple is basically a doll. I was also annoyed at the flimsy foiliness of Commander/Admiral Zhao. Did he have to suck so badly? And talk so much? And get a stupid death? (I assume he died in episode 20?) Also, Zuko reaching out to save him made me roll my eyes. I know, Zuko is turning into a sympathetic character as the series goes on, and I'm not adverse to it, I just don't want to be shoved SO HARD at times. :P I also didn't understand why Aang had to slack so badly under the waterbending master. Was it another instance of gotta have contrast (in this case with Katara)?
The positives: Katara getting pissed at the waterbending master and challenging him to a duel. The Fire Nation ships getting shoved backward by SuperAvatarAang in episode 20 (Fire Nation ships really need to be shoved around more). Zuko rescuing Aang from Zhao and Aang rescuing Zuko after Zuko got knocked out (twice!). Appa fighting. Sokka getting mad at Princess
Doll Yue's fiancee for being a jerk. How sweet the kids are. They may lash out or get mad or do something stupid, but they come around pretty fast and stick together. No over-angsting here! (Yet?) Even Zuko, who could totally angst if he wanted to, is just kinda driven. It's refreshing.
I stumbled on a post asking for young adult books for a 13 year old reader interested in reading romance at Smart Bitches Trashy Books, which resulted in a torrent of recs. I smiled at the ones I recognized and loved, and saw a bunch I hope to check out. Another post reviewed/rec'd a book in English set in Edo Japan called The Tokaido Road by Lucia St. Clair Robson. I'm tempted to read it even though I avoid books in English set in the past in Japan. In contrast, I laughed reading a hilarious skewering of a rather awful romance book. It reminds me a bit of the kind of thing I write when I've read some god-awful BL novel...
Explicit by Resonant, Sherlock, S/J, John is clueless and aggravating. Of course Sherlock can't help it. XD;
Harry Watson Investigates by orange_crushed, Sherlock, gen AU, sequel to The dangerous book for boys.
Conquered, Fallen, and Deep by tetsubinatu, Merlin, dark slavefic AU where Merlin is a prince. The first two is vanilla slavefic, but I rather liked the third fic.
You're watching ATLA! Yay! You will LOVE season two. :D Season one is good and all, but season two is a hundred times better!
Zhao was such a lame villain. Azula will make up for him, though - I guarantee it. ;) I don't consider Zuko to be a real villain, either - he's more of an anti-hero. He's got a pretty angsty background, but I like how he manages to be a complete dork a lot of the time.
As for Yue... yeah, she was pretty much a plot device. Sokka does get a new love interest in the next season, though, and although she's not given as much development as the other characters, she does know how to handle herself in a fight.
I'm glad to know that since I'm on the verge of watching it. XD Azula was introduced in the last episode and I was hoping that she would be a better villain--glad to hear that she will not disappoint. Also glad to hear Sokka gets a real girl for a love interest. XD;
Just in general, there are a lot more interesting female characters in the next season. The first season seemed like more of an introduction to the plot more than anything. There were a few really good episodes (The Storm, The Blue Spirit, and the last two episodes were probably my favorites) but on the whole, it wasn't nearly as good as the seasons that followed it.
Even Zuko, who could totally angst if he wanted to, is just kinda driven.
Yeah, uh....enjoy that while that lasts...
(I love Zuko, actually, he and [character you haven't met yet] are two of my favorite characters EVER, but I am not blind to the fact that he can be really super angsty.)
But anyway, yes, season two is a million times better than season one (and then season three is a million times better than that), so enjoy the ride! It is such a great show.
Thanks for the heads up on Zuko!angst. I'm not surprised he turns angsty, I was just happy he wasn't too angsty up to this point.
Heh cool! I saw the season I two weekends ago, I think? Its so much fun! I really like Sokka, idiot he may pretend to be but he is actually quite smart and he has a very cheeky grin :) And I agree with the Yue . . . it could have been more epic, but I feel like she was there just to move things along and provide some angst lol,
Katara is kinda awesome and I really like the relationship btw brother and sister. Aang is adorable and I am a wee bit worried for him seeing as what is coming. Zuko is also pretty awesome as is his uncle.
Alll in all Im looking forward to seeing the rest (and its going to be awhile before I get to it :( !)
Also have you read the Sherlock fic where John can see wings after an inicident? And it's not terrible? :)
