Answer: BOTH! Also, enemies! (Sometimes?)

So, I've been sucked into a new fandom. thefourthvine recc'd the first fic in my list below, I loved it, and then I started reading tons of Iron Man/Captain America fics. I watched this year's Captain America and enjoyed it but hadn't seen either Iron Man or Thor, but I suppose it doesn't matter in the end because lots of the fics are based on the comics. According to a friend knowledgeable in comics, that is an eminently slashable pairing from long ago. Since there are different timelines the details (and sometimes the entire premise of the world) are pretty different. I just read a bunch and made a list of the ones I liked.

Tomorrow Belongs To Me by valtyr, movies, a REALLY long and satisfying fic detailing how Steve wakes up in the present day and learns to adjust. There's a lot of hilarious bits and the romance is absolutely lovely. Oh, and there's a threat and some fighting and adventure. All around awesome. Just don't start reading it before work because you may end up late.

Honey, I Can See the Stars by twentysomething, movies, Steve is clueless but sweet and Tony doesn't quite know how to deal. There's also a pesky Clause V in the way, but the little things don't matter in the end.

Childhood Sweetheart by valtyr, comics, an adorable fic about how the two react to the NY same sex marriage thing. And when I say adorable, I mean adorable.

Scale and Perspective (The Technicolor Remix) by destroythemeek, comics, super sweet fic involving Steve's art and how they get together.

En Suite by valtyr, comics, PWP shower sex.

Toys by valtyr, comics, ridiculously and adorably sweet bit o' fic. Steve is sad because of something somewhat trivial and Tony doesn't make fun of him, he comforts him.

Look here, look back, look ahead by marinarusalka, not sure how it relates to the comics, it's set in the 40's, Iron Man crashes into the mountains returning from a mission and is rescued by Captain America on his own mission. They team up, but turns out there's a big secret that comes between them...

age is an irrational number by valtyr, comics, Steve and Tony are married and grow old together.

by tsukinofaerii, comics, totally cracky fluff.

Apparently Only One Meal From Barbarism by valtyr, comics, kinda nasty but hilarious too. Toxic mongoose is the operative word here.

Heart of Steel by Muccamukk, comics and movie, Steve wakes up in a dystopian future and ends up in a marriage of convenience with Tony. Sadly, it's WIP and probably will not be finished (last updated January 2010) but I enjoyed the eight existing chapters.

On the Record by valtyr, comics, the tabloids have a problematic headline featuring Tony and Steve. Everyone's horrified and tries to hide it from Steve. Steve finds out (naturally), but his reaction...

Lack of Restraint by often_adamanta, movies, Steve wants Tony to tie him up. It's kink, yes, but it's also about other issues. It's rather sweet.

Secrets of a Successful Marriage by valtyr, comics, Tony is a supervillian married to Steve who is a superhero. It all works because they haven't told each other, but naturally it comes out when Steve is captured by a fellow supervillian...

What Lies Inside by Penumbren, comics, when they find Captain America in ice, Tony the werewolf finds his mate. Oh yes, one of those stories. There's lots of pining and angst. It's great!

hadn't seen either Iron Man or Thor, but I suppose it doesn't matter in the end because lots of the fics are based on the comics.

I'd recommend watching Iron Man 1, at least, because Robert Downey Jr. creates this whole awesome persona for Tony Stark, and when you get to know him, fics based on the movieverse get a million times better, believe me :)

(I'm currently three fics into this ship - only used to ship Tony/Pepper before - but I'm all about the movieverse so I don't really read fics based on comics - to much details, too much backstory I don't get)

Here's one I read today and loved: http://gyzym.livejournal.com/105050.html

I've heard the first Iron Man is quite good, but I just haven't gotten around to seeing it. I'll probably see that and Thor sometime soon...

Totally makes sense. Luckily, I'm used to reading in fandoms in which I know almost nothing about anything. XD;

Thanks for the rec! It looks pretty long so I'll have to wait to read it (will leave soon). GAH.

dfiaosjfaldkfl; I've read all but four of those in like two weeks and one I was avoiding because it was a WIP and I learned my lesson after the 200K Thor/Loki one where they haven't even MET yet and also the dystopian Charles/Erik one that I'm eating up like poisoned candy.

Wow, 200K Thor/Loki WIP in which they haven't even met...That sounds a bit horrifying. Was it actually finished? If the author stopped that would suck even harder.

Any fics you'd rec I may not have read? I've read through AO3's offerings, basically, but I haven't branched out (yet).

Uhhh check my pinboard? https://pinboard.in/u:lazulisong I really reccomend Valtyr as a writer, she's awesome. Tsukinofaerii, despite the name, is pretty good too.

as for the Thor/Loki one, it's still being updated but I'm only keeping a weather eye on it. It's amazing, though; instead of being stolen by Odin, Loki is raised as the King of Jotun's favored son, and there is world building and Loki being a crazy son of a bitch and awesome all around. I THINK it's eventually going to be some sort of arranged marriage business?

Did you find that one timeline some comm mods compiled of every slashy moment for this pairing in the comics they could find, scanned and ordered chronologically? God bless comics nerds, for they are inheriting as we speak. XD

No I haven't, but it sounds awesome! Scanned and ordered chronologically? That's...amazing.

Especially since they didn't happen in chronological order serialization-wise (flashbacks, retcons, etc.). I found it for you, here: http://cap-ironman.livejournal.com/539696.html

That is really what I consider a Work, as fandom goes. XD

Captain A and Ironman? what an odd pairing. :) I'll have to read a few to test it out.

Both Thor and Ironman movies are fun. I hear Loki is popular among the fanwork crowd, too.

Yes, try it! It can take only one fic to suck a person into a pairing, after all. XD;
