Thanks for the congratulations on my last post! I got a HUGE basket of tea from my loan officer, which totally made my day. I love thoughtful gifts where the giver actually notices something the person seems to really like and gives an appropriate present. XD

I thought I wouldn't be posting much because of the move and work, but it seems my neighbors conspire against me. They are making such a racket I can't possibly sleep (even though I fell asleep at work today, I was so tired). Instead of fuming over the lost sleep I decided to post something.

An interesting sidenote to the Nitta Youka tracing blow-up is the number of people I've seen preface their comments with a "I'm not into her..." or "I don't like her...." While personal taste is, duh, personal, it's still so interesting to see who doesn't like this or that popular artist. I thought I'd talk about the reasons why I don't like artists (or aspects of their work).

Top of my list is Naono Bohra. OMG her art repels me. I've seen her reccomended so much, but I...just can't get past her art. It's primarily the eyes. They are droopy and sickly and just plain icky. I've yet to get through a single manga of hers, so I can't judge her for the story or characters, unfortunately.

Next is Shimizu Yuki. I like her art, but her stories and characters often annoy the crap out of me. My dislike for her is qualified, in that she annoys me when she does serious angst. I like her a lot when she does comedy or happy couples, but when she goes for drama she completely loses me--which is why I stopped reading Ze (and didn't read a huge chunk of Love Mode).

I've grown to dislike Koujima Naduki a lot. She draws cheeks too round...and the bodies! They contort so strangely! My eye is invariably drawn to the oddly placed shoulder or hip, and I think how they must be gummy people to be in that position....But what's really turned me off of her is her stories. They are stupid. Her characters (especially the ukes) are stupid. They act in ridiculous ways. Even the novels she illustrates tend to be this way! I know that in many ways what she does is very typical BL...but I've come to feel that she just takes it a step too low.

Though I like her manga, I find Kada Michiru's art rather disturbing. Especially the eyes, which look like a bunch of lines drawn in an eye shape. The noses and mouths are odd, too, but I can live with them. Or is it that the eyes are so weird everything else doesn't look so bad? ^^;

I get distracted by the proportions of the bodies Kodaka Kazuma draws. Somehow they just don't seem...right. Are the heads too big? I've never figured out what bothers me about her art. Sadly, I've come to dislike some of her most famous works. Ranmaru and Kei from Kizuna bore the crap out of me. Kusatta Kyoushi no Houteishiki pissed me off. Midare Somenishi is massively cliched (especially the story about the younger brother--I was happy when he died), but in the end I can say I like it because the main two kept fighting each other to the end. I think I found Not Ready Sensei and Mezase Hero boring, but I don't remember enough to say anything solid.

You know, I think I own Hikaru no Go and PoT doujinshi by her because friends bought them for me as omiyage. I wonder where they went to...

Misara Minase has been such a disappointment...empty heart was so lovely, but nothing else of hers has really worked for me. I'm coming to associate her art (especially those distinctive eyes of hers) with pointless cliched nothing stories featuring empty characters trying to convey a sense of having real feelings and failing...

Takaguchi Satosumi's manga (the ones she wrote and drew) have been big disappointments for me. I appreciate that she does different stuff, but they just fail to draw me. It's odd how I end up disliking almost every light colored long haired kid that appear in her stories. The biggest disappointment for me is probably Utsukushii Otoko. I stuck with it for four or five volumes, hoping for...something. What, I'm not sure. Maybe to care? Didn't happen. That pilot kid was totally annoying and the unfrozen pilot was bland, bland, bland. Even the whole affair with his father (or whatever that was, I no longer remember very clearly) came off so bleah. Maybe I'll track down the last volume or two and find out what happened, just for closure. I don't have much hope that it kicked ass.

I'm amazed at how fugly Kotobuki Tarako's art is every time I pick up Sex Pistols. She needs to up the crack factor to keep me interested in the series, though.

I love Yamane Ayano's art, but I wish she'd stick to hopelessly sappy/silly/fun or over-the-top insanity. I think the latest chapters of Viewfinder AND Crimson Spell have fell into the utterly conventional, which is making them less interesting. I'm now longing for that short story series about the two high school students who suspect that their fathers are lovers, or something similarly silly. I'd rather have mindless smut over Yamane-sensei taking her story and characters too seriously and crushing the life out of them. :P

There's this one artist that does really pointy chins whose name escapes me...Arg. I dislike her so much I avoid reading novels illustrated by her, so I suppose I just blocked her right out of my mind. I can't overcome my distaste and just ignore the art to read the story, no matter how interesting it seems. I know it'll come to me in the middle of the night, right before I fall asleep...

Hm...Sounds like my neighbors have quieted down a bit? I think I'll try to sleep now. Please keep quiet, people. Please.

I needed to go back to see what people were congratulating you about! and yeah that's a real GREAT thing to get congratulated on, so eheh, a bit late but Felicitation! XD
I'd love to own a house of my own but a house in Paris is pratically out of my ligue right now. I don't want to part with the city's downtown cause it'd be pointless (for me) to stay here and live somewhere in suburb, you'll get what I mean once you live here for a bit.

Anyway you got me right here with this post! I dislike 98% of what you dislike about the mangakas you pointed above ^__^ I've wanted to rant on mangakas and mangas that annoy me for quite a while now but couldn't manage the time to do so, there's quite a number of them. How about Chitose Piyoko and Haruka Minami? I can't stand their mangas!

Thanks! I remember seeing a show on house-hunting in Paris and the prices were pretty high. It must be great living in the middle of a fabulous city, even if you aren't on your own. XD

I don't think I've read enough Chitose Piyoko to have an opinion on her. Haruka Minami's art is pretty repellent...I don't remember the stories, though. I think I didn't like them...

Naono Bohra - I fell in love with the cover of Desire Boy, and then when I opened it up...I got pissed. :/ There's just some creators that are better 'illustrators' than they are sequential artists.

On Yuki - I hate her artwork. It's everything I hate about the 'wispy' aesthetic; and I happen to dig Konohara Narise for weird reasons and it truly bugged me that the first titles June licensed of Narise's were illustrated by Shimizu Yuki >_<

The top of my list will always be Shiuko Kano. I hate this woman's artwork with such a passion. If she ever gives up BL, she could easily find work as a toy designer for the company that make 'Aliens' merchandise. I swear, I dread each turn of the page where I know eventually her men are going to get naked and have sex--honestly, who wants to look at bodies like that? Don't even get me started on her men's features--it's as if she took a class on faces from Picasso.

AND- because I love 'real' seinen-Yakuza manga, Yamane Ayano will always be on my shit list. She proves time and again that too much of a good thing--turns into a bad thing.

I like wispy, but a lot of times it gets out of hand. Shimizu Yuki's art totally works for me, but if her stories and characters repel me, what's the point? Hopefully they license Konohara Narise's better novels...some of which are illustrated by some pretty bad artists, unfortunately.

Talk about people having very different tastes! I tend to like Kano Shiuko if she draws men and not boys. Her stories are very hit-and-miss.

Yamane Ayano needs to go with overblown insanity and crack rather than trying to turn too serious. I've read too many BL yakuza stories for my own good, I can't take much BL with yakuza in them very seriously...

Hehe, I like Naono Bohra--though yes, at first her art was all "wtf" to me, I grew used to it and wow, I can actually identify and name a mangaka. Eh heh.

But... how you feel about her (and the rest that you've named) is like how I feel about Nitta Youka. I reaaaallllyyyy don't like her art, to the point that every time I see a manga of hers, my eyes automatically skip right over it. It's just. Urgh! I don't know why I hate her art so much, but I do. XD So I guess I really don't care if she does or does not continue drawing manga.

*laughs* So is it just art but also her stories and characters? Or are you too repelled by the art to have ever read anything?

I-I tried! I did! But I couldn't stand the art for too long, and I think I didn't like the story I was reading as well. Hrm. After that I just avoided completely. XD;

OMG. I always felt so guilty because I couldn't never like Naono Bohra. I know she has good stories and her characters aren't always the perfect bishounen, but... I don't like her art. ^^;

I never liked Youka Nitta, and never couldn't stand Kazuma Koudaka stories - even when I was really into BL, but the time has made me apart from the genre so I don't know a lot of relatively new mangaka. The time has made me hate Yamane Ayano with a burning passion too. ^^;

You know, Masara Minase only has pretty art, but.... well, it wasn't like I was expecting too much of yaoi stories.

The only one I loved and still love is Kunieda Saika. God, I love that woman. XD

I felt like I was missing out since Naono Bohra gets such rave reviews, but I've grown resigned to never finding out if her stories are as wonderful as they are supposed to be. ^^;

I don't think I'm familiar with Kunieda Saika. Any particular manga you'd reccomend?

Really? Well, without a doubt I will recommend Kaze no Yukue and its prequel, Memories of the future (I can't remember its name in Japanese ^^;). It's weird you didn't read it since they aren't so new, and not so obscure either.

My top of the list is the one that draws guys like little girls and has them dress like girls also. Heck they look 100% like girls. Most of the stories they can be replaced with girls without any difficulty I swear. Something like Boku no Piko. The name escapes me atm but quite popular and draws quite a lot of stories.

I never read Nitta Youka. The first time I read is the last. Couldn't continue reading. But I watch the anime. The story is really nice for the 2 OVA made.

Doesn't read Kadoka Kazuma. I have the same feeling towards this mangaka's manga as I have towards Nitta Youka.

Love Mode I only like the first funny story(and first pairing). The 2nd about the boss and the kid I don't like. The rest of the pairings I don't even remember.

I normally don't read Naono Bohra's manga. I read some, a few are nice stories but some I don't remember so it's okok.

Sex Pistols is nice story. Although I didn't continue the rest, it's too long. The art isn't something you'll like a lot though.
