assholes on the internet are everywhere [Aug. 2nd, 2008|07:56 am]
[Current Mood |blahblah]

The New York Times profiles The Trolls Among Us, about really awful people with what seems to be no humanity.

On the Media Comments on comments, about the problems with message boards on media (newspaper, etc) sites and the crap anonymous people spew. Great comments to the piece. XD

I'm always amazed at how asshole-ish comments to news stories at media sites and forums are. Lots of blaming, name-calling, assumptions of motive, etc. It's very discouraging.

The longer I am on the internet, the less I am encouraged to get involved because of what is, I know, a minority but a vocal and very annoying/scaring/hurtful one... namely the throlls and the anonymous commenters who have no humanity or at least love to pretend they have none.

I read the first article yesterday when a Quebec blogger I read on the online version of La Presse (French-Canada newspaper) linked to it. I had been reading this guy's blog for a few months (6-12 max) and the level of nastiness in the comments is scary... plus the fact it seems that there is a lot of these nasty who have no life (because if they have time to put all those comments during the day and read others? They most assuredly are not working)...

All in all, I guess, I totally agree with your last paragraph.

It's so disheartening to get very few thoughtful comments on a lot of stories. I want to know what other people are thinking, but the ones that comment seem to be total assholes. Would these people ever dare to say such things to someone's face? *sighs*

Yeah, That's why I HATE with a burning passion everything that has to do with 4chan and stuff. The level of 'amoral teenagers-like' that brings that kind of anonymity is astounding.

I'd only recently heard of 4chan (thank goodness) and have never had an urge to even check it out. Ugh.
