I love reading fanfics in fandoms I don't follow. There's just something liberating about not having to worry about OOC-ness (or more like being irritated by an OOC-ness different from my own preference, if I'm not particularly stuck on the characters being "IC"). Somehow or another I stumbled upon a NaruSasu fic called Self Reliance (which is, sadly, a WIP and wlll probably remain unfinished). It has mpreg! A planned mpreg! Like, a really lame plan for mpreg that the character who came up with the plan thinks is just brilliant! I particularly love the dynamic between the fox spirit and Naruto. I hoped for more fun by looking for more NaruSasu fics (I read a couple of SasuNaru and was really repelled by the Naruto characterization--too typical weepy uke shit for me, especially since Naruto seemed like the typical downtrodden yet spunky and brash/bratty shonen hero from what I saw) but unfortunately what I found was pretty crappy.
It's been a while since I'd read low-level anime fangirl crap, so it was a jolt when I had an "aha!" moment with a term that kept coming up that I couldn't figure out, "teme." I wondered if it was some term often used in Naruto (like "dobe")...I was also pronouncing it like "team." Then I realized it was テメエ, as in "you bastard." The writers were using it as a generic noun for "bastard." I'd come across this before but it'd been so long I'd forgotten. Luckily this was the only major fangirl Japanese I came across so it was just nostalgic and delightful rather than irritating. XDXD
The contrast between the relatively good writing populating English Hikago and PoT fandom (at least the portions I visited) and something with scary mass appeal like Naruto is striking. It reminds me of the old days of reading Gundam Wing fic, especially the sheer amount of annoying eye color descriptors.
