i need brainless yet good and satisfying manga [Aug. 2nd, 2009|12:24 am]

I was wandering about my house wanting to read a good story when I happened upon a pile o' manga tucked in an out the way location. When I looked at it closely, I realized it was the Mainichi Seiten series I'd bought on my trip. I managed to get all the available volumes except one (Isoganaide), since I've heard a lot of good things about the series. I started flipping through them and sadly came to the conclusion that this is NOT a flip-through story. I actually need to focus and read! And I don't have the brain power to do so right now, thanks to a wonderful combination of massive deadline at work and insomnia. I did notice that the art is A LOT better in the latest volumes, which is always a plus. I hate it when art goes downhill over time.

Speaking of art going downhill, I am so sad over Nara Chiharu's evolving art style. She used to be so damn good, but now...The faces are just off. I was browsing Amazon Japan and came across the reprints of the first two volumes of the Ryuu & Dr series that'd come out recently. Apparently they've been extensively revised, so of course I have to buy them, but I fear the art.

I don't know which is worse, a good artist going bad or having the artist replaced by someone who just isn't as good (like with Flesh & Blood).

Anyone have a rec on a satisfying yet not too taxing on the brain manga? I want to read something new, otherwise I'd just dig out one of my oldies but goodies.

Oh, what a coincidence! I was literally just sitting down today to post a detailed squee about the first two volumes of Mainichi Seiten. (Stay tuned.) Now I have even more motivation to do it, yay. But I agree, it is NOT a flip through read. In fact, the reason I tried it and gave up on it some three years ago was that I wasn't ready for such a dense read in Japanese.

I wish I could rec something, but all of my brain-resting manga is probably an "oldie but goodie" to you? However, FWIW, when I have that problem, I go straight to Higashino You or Fujisaki Kou, because they never fail to bring the entertainingly stupid, and they were my first manga loves. Tennohji Mio is also good for the same reason. I used to go to Minami Haruka and Chitose Piyoko for the pure brainless smut, but now I kind of find them to be TOO brainless. Well, a few of their stories are genuinely cute and entertaining. But I think this was all in my recent comfort manga post, which you probably read. For something else that I recently picked up and found surprisingly restful, there's Itsuki Kaname's Wagamama Dakedo Itoshikute. Or, hey, how about CJ Michalski's Secret Connection, or Itsuka Koi ga Kanau Made?

Eh, I'm sorry, that probably didn't help at all. But I will work on my Mainichi Seiten review in hopes of inspiring you with the energy to work through it.

You know, I don't think I've read most of the manga you've mentioned. But then, I've focused on BL novels for the past several years so I don't read as much manga as I used to. Do you have any specific recs on the artists you mentioned?

Ooh, recs! I live to rec, but I'm actually sitting in the airport right now (free wireless, go Hartford CT!) and don't think I'll have time to do it justice. I can try to respond after my trip, but if you're curious in the meantime, click on my "manga reports" tag. Also, there was a "comfort manga" discussion on my journal just a month or so ago -- that's probably tagged "manga" as well. (My "manga" tag is more general than my "manga reports" tag, but they overlap a lot.) Anyway, I've either recced or discussed all the authors I mentioned in my journal multiple times. Have fun reading!

(FYI, Secret Connection has now been licensed in English as "Noodle Shop Affair", wtf title, seriously, "Secret Connection" wasn't English enough for you?)
